When secondhand clothing first arrived from “the west” in the 70’s, people in Ghana couldn’t believe that such high-quality clothing was given away for free, so they assumed that the previous owner must have died. This expression doesn’t completely fit anymore. Clothing is being tossed away by the end of the day, rather than by the end of life, due to the increased production and consumption of fast fashion.
